Weed FAQs

Can You Smoke Weed Leaves?

The short answer is yes, the leaves, just like the stems, flower buds and extracts from the marijuana plant can be smoked. They can also be vaporized, eaten, brewed in a tea or put into a tincture. The big, fan-like “sugar leaves” of the plant can be harvested, dried out, and smoked but it won’t produce the kind of high you might want in the end. The best way to “smoke” the leaves is to harvest them and then use a machine called a pollinator to shake them free of their trichomes for use in hash, resin, canna-butter, or other extracts.

Why Does Weed Turn Your Eyes Red?

Weed causes your eyes to turn red as THC lowers blood pressure and causes dilation in blood vessels and capillaries. This is one of the primary mechanisms used in cannabis-based treatment of Glaucoma, as this vasodilation can help relieve unwanted ocular pressure. Products such as Visine or highly caffeinated food and beverages can help alleviate eye redness.

What Does Weed Taste Like?

As the market for marijuana grows, so do the variety of strains and olfactory profiles that make each one so unique. Typically, when we talk about the flavour of marijuana, we are referring to the oils secreted from the same glands that produce cannabinoids (like THC and CBD). Those oils are called “terpenes”, and can range in flavour and scent from lemon to berry and from perfume to gasoline. Each strain of marijuana has a distinct terpene profile which helps to define it, and that’s where we get such whimsical names as Strawberry Cough, Black Cherry Cola, and even Sour Diesel. The taste is most profound when vaporized at a low temperature, but it becomes bitter and harsh upon decarboxylation.

Can Weed Make You Hallucinate?

Normal, short-term cannabis use cannot make you hallucinate. Synthetic Cannabis, known as K2 or “Spice”, however, has sent hundreds of users to the hospital with severe hallucinations and rapid heartbeats. Marijuana differs from the common hallucinogen LSD in that LSD mimics a serotonin receptor known as 5-HT2A that causes users to see things that are not there. Users who wish to avoid hallucinating should avoid synthetic products.

Hotboxing is an activity where a user(s) smokes cannabis in an enclosed and unventilated space like a closet, car, shed, or blanket fort. A study at Johns Hopkins confirmed that smoking in this fashion can get users far more intoxicated.  They achieved this by placing non-smokers in the same environment as those who were inhaling the smoke first hand, then measuring the effects that the second hand smoke had on the non-smoking participants.  Some refer to this as a contact high.

Does Weed Grow Brain Cells?

Research shows that the cannabinoids in cannabis promote neurogenesis: the brain’s process of growing cells. This process primarily occurs in the hippocampus, which is capable of producing more than 5000 new cells each day and plays a role in our memory, spatial orientation and learning. Studies done at universities in Saskatchewan, Brazil and Madrid indeed confirm that while most “drugs of abuse” suppress neurogenesis, marijuana indeed promotes it.

Different methods of administration will dictate how quickly cannabinoids are absorbed. Even though edibles contain the same active ingredient as marijuana — THC — they affect you in a different way. This is because cannabis has to be processed by the liver when ingested orally, which is a more strenuous and lengthy unfolding.

What Does Hash Look Like?

Hashish or hash is a more potent form of cannabis. It can be solid or resinous, according to how it is made.  Pressed hash is usually solid, while water-purified hashish, or “bubble melt hash,” has a pasty consistency, running from hard to very soft. The colours of hash are normally light to dark brown, but can also range from transparent to yellow, tan, black and red.

Are Vapes Bad For You?

The term vaping is short for vaporizing or vaporizer. It is a process of heating up dry cannabis or cannabis concentrates to a temperature that is below the combustion threshold. Vaporizers do not produce smoke, but instead, release cannabis’s active ingredients (THC and CBD) as an aerosol. Inhaling smoke can expose you to harmful toxins and cancer causing substances. While vaporizers do mitigate this, harms from its use still exist.

Is Marijuana Good For You?

Further study is needed, before scientists can’t conclusively say that weed is good for you or bad for you in the long term. It is likely a mixture of both. Marijuana is thought to have both positive and negative effects on many different parts of the body. Some well-known positive effects of weed include the reduction of nausea and vomiting among chemotherapy patients and appetite stimulation among patients with HIV/AIDS.

Are Dabs Bad For You?

“Dabbing” is the increasingly popular practice of smoking marijuana extracts, made by dissolving marijuana in butane. The extract’s greater concentration of THC means it provides a more euphoric high than conventional cannabis. While no research yet exists showing that dabbing is more dangerous than smoking regular weed, users need to beware of more pronounced side effects, such as poor coordination and judgment.

Can Weed Make You Depressed?

Chronic marijuana use can cause one to suffer long-term feelings of depression by adversely affecting the brain’s serotonin levels and reward processing capacity. Dose size is an important factor, with occasional smaller doses promoting euphoria. Those who start consuming cannabis in adolescents are at a greater risk for developing depression than those who start later in life. Women are more at risk than men in this regard.

What Does Weed Do To Your Lungs?

Large-scale studies have not been able to link smoking weed to lung cancer or other serious respiratory conditions.  Marijuana smoke contains some cancer-causing compounds and deposits tar in the lungs, yet there has been little evidence linking moderate marijuana use to lung cancer.  Smoking weed can cause short-term respiratory irritation such as coughing and sore throat.  Weed can be consumed in other ways to reduce the impact on respiratory health.

How Do You Get Medical Cannabis?

There are currently three ways to get legal, medical cannabis in Canada. You can either purchase cannabis from a licensed producer, or you or a friend can grow medical cannabis yourselves. For all options, you will first need a document from your health care practitioner and you will need to register with the supplier or Health Canada. Both methods are strictly regulated. Storefront dispensaries, while increasingly common, are not legal.

Why Does Weed Give Me Anxiety?

Anxiety often presents with feelings of dread, restlessness, and overreaction. It is often compared to the fear response, but unlike anxiety, fear is an appropriate cognitive and emotional response to a perceived threat. Anxiety is a behavior response to a perceived threat that is thought to be uncontrollable or unavoidable but unrealistically so. Marijuana consumption is commonly associated with this emotional distress and may be due to its chemical composition.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are fragrant oils found in the resin glands of cannabis. When inhaled, they assist cannabinoids in penetrating the blood-brain barrier and have implications for the production and destruction of both serotonin and dopamine. There are several different kinds of terpenes, each with their own medical benefits. They are useful in treating inflammation, depression, anxiety, suppressing fluids, fighting bacteria and healing wounds. Though promising, legality of testing is an impediment to terpene research.

Are Edibles Bad For Your Liver?

While cannabis infused edibles neither cause nor contribute to chronic or acute liver disease, studies suggesting edibles as a viable option for gastrointestinal or liver rehabilitation therapy are largely anecdotal. Until such a time as further comprehensive academic studies are conducted regarding the usage of cannabis in this way, it is widely acknowledged that moderate utilization of cannabis-infused edibles is entirely safe for the biliary and gastrointestinal tract.

How Long Does It Take For Weed To Wear Off?

Weed usually takes two to three hours to wear off when it is smoked. If you eat an edible, the effects will last much longer, typically from four to six hours. THC stays in a person’s system for several days or weeks after the user stops feeling the effects — that means that people can test positively for marijuana use even if they don’t feel high.

How Much Weed Is In An Ounce?

An ounce is a unit of weight. One ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, or about twenty-eight grams. So, an ounce of weed weighs about twenty-eight grams. An ounce of weed is a considerable amount; a single gram can last for several smoke sessions, depending on the person’s tolerance. A scale should be used to measure out an ounce of weed, as the size of the weed is not reliable.

What Is Bubble Hash?

Bubble Hash is a form of hash that is made by using ice and ice water to separate THC-rich trichomes from the marijuana plant matter itself. Many cannabis enthusiasts consider it a healthier alternative as smoking it does not create the same chemicals that arise from plant combustion. At $10-30 per gram, it is cheaper than other extracts like budder, wax and shatter.

Does Smoking Weed Kill Brain Cells?

The idea that Marijuana kills brain cells is unfounded, and dates back to popular anti-drug campaigns of the 70’s and 80’s. Rather, the photo-cannabinoids in cannabis are shown to interact positively with CB1 receptors in the brain’s endocannabinoid system. This has benefits for seizures, Alzheimer’s and cell regeneration. A study done on animals shows that both THC and CBD promote the formation of new healthy cells in the adult brain.

Does Cannabis Oil Kill Cancer Cells?

It is true that studies have shown that some cannabis components, called cannabinoids, may be able to kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells healthy. Studies also showed that cannabinoids may be able to stop tumour growth by killing cells and stopping the growth of new ones. However, these studies were performed on mice and rats, not humans. More research is needed before knowing if humans will experience those effects.

How Do Cannabinoids Work?

Cannabinoids work by binding to specialized receptors in the brain and other parts of the body.  This binding causes neurons to release different amounts of chemicals, such as dopamine.  Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in parts of the brain that deal with short-term memory, coordination, appetite, and mood.  Some cannabinoid receptors are also found in the immune system, which may be how marijuana helps regulate pain and inflammation.

Why is Marijuana Illegal?

By many accounts, the “war on drugs” mentality in Canada began with the release of a book called The Black Candle in 1922. Written by Emily F. Murphy under the pen name “Janey Canuck” in 1922, the book called for law enforcement to address the problem of Cannabis. Shortly afterwards, Cannabis was added to the Confidential Restricted List in 1923 under the Narcotics Drug Act Amendment Bill when the government introduced the Act to Prohibit the Improper Use of Opium and other Drugs.
